This delightful oil sketch of the Riva della Schiavoni in Venice comes from an unspecified estate in Ǻrhus, Denmark through a Danish auction house. The similarity with John Singer Sargent's Venice par temps gris (literally: grey weather in Venice) is remarkable.
The work was technically examined by Mrs. Catherina M. Groen MSc. The painting was also brought before the John Singer Sargent Catalogue Raisonnee Committee in New York, but the members did not want to include 'Evening in Venice' in the John Singer Sargent Catalogue Raisonnee. Unfortunately, the Committee never comments on the reasons for such a decision, so how they came to their conclusion we shall never know.
The writing on the back dates from the end of the 19th century. John Singer Sargent was a young artist around the 1880's and one cannot imagine anyone copying the work of an artist who is not yet well-known.
